Bruno Liljefors was born on 14 May 1860 in Uppsala, Sweden. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and travelled to Germany and Venice to broaden his skills. He became the greatest Swedish wildlife painter of his era and one of the most influential nature painters in European art history. Key works
Fox in Winter Landscape
One of Liljefors's most iconic motifs — a fox moving silently through snow — combines precise naturalistic observation with a painterly mastery of winter light and camouflage.
Winter Hare
The Winter Hare (Vinterhare) is among his most celebrated works, showing a white hare against a snowy landscape with extraordinary skill in depicting the animal's coat and its integration with the winter environment.
Capercaillie / Tjäder
Liljefors's paintings of capercaillie in woodland settings — especially the mating displays — are masterpieces of atmospheric forest light and animal behaviour.
Eagles and Hare / Örnar och hare
His large-format eagle paintings, including Eagles and Hare, capture the drama of predator and prey with a visceral directness that sets them apart in European wildlife painting.
Sea Eagles / Havsörnar
The sea eagle paintings are among Liljefors's most powerful — birds of prey in coastal and archipelago settings, painted with his characteristic fusion of scientific accuracy and painterly freedom.
